Session 1: Why do you want to be a Head? What governors are looking for. The skills and attributes needed to lead a school successfully. This session will focus on looking at styles of leadership and essential qualities needed to lead a school successfully. We shall look at what governors look for when making an appointment and the role of executive recruitment companies.
Session 2: The day-to-day issues and how to handle them. Case Studies: A discussion session. How to respond to issues great and small that cross every head’s desk. This session will focus on looking at a broad range of issues that heads have to deal with and how to successfully respond to a range of everyday problems.
Session 3: How to make a successful application. A practical session. This session will focus on the practicalities of making an application and the selection process: formal interview, making a presentation, in-tray exercises, psychometric testing.
Session 4: The first six months: establishing yourself in a new role. Looking at making the transition from deputy to Head. This session will focus on how to make the transition from deputy to head, how to establish yourself as a new head, the do’s and don’ts, the pitfalls to avoid.
